Trump Sends NRA Crowd into a Frenzy, Drops Epic Zinger on Clinton's Election Night Debacle
There were plenty of zingers in President Donald Trump’s speech to the National Rifle Association’s national convention on Friday, but one of the best was reserved specially for everyone who doubted he could beat Hillary Clinton back in 2016.
During the wide-ranging speech, which lasted over three-quarters of an hour, the president discussed his many battles — including with taxes, unemployment and Robert Mueller’s “witch hunt.”
“Let me tell you folks, we are all fighting battles, but I love fighting these battles,” the president said.
“You have a battle also, you have a battle to keep your rights. And we’re going to keep those rights,” Trump continued, referring to the Second Amendment.
“You’re going to be so happy. You have to say, you weren’t sure Trump was going to win, but you all went out there. You all went out there and you voted,” Trump said, a slight smile cracking across his face.
Trump then pointed to what he called “phony” polls, saying that the media wanted to convince people that by voting they were “wasting your time.”
“Why should you vote? Go to a movie instead, come home, watch the results,” he continued.
“Very few of the people in this room and in this country did that — and we really had a big night.”
“Remember they said there’s no way, Electoral College, there is no way to 270 for me? There is no way to 270.
“They were right — but 306 was OK, right?” the president said, eliciting laughter and cheers from the audience by referencing his final Electoral College tally.
“Three-oh-six,” he continued. “So, we had a great time. I think we are doing better now than ever before. I think we are more popular now from the standpoint now we produce.”
Ouch.
Of course, that number — 306 — is something that Hillaristas have done everything possible to try to ignore and nullify in the intervening year-and-a-half.
First they tried allegations of “irregular voting.” (Remember the Jill Stein-bankrolled recounts?) Then it was fake news. Then it was that old reliable adversary, the Russians.
For the most part, Hillary partisans have settled on the final one as an excuse for why their anointed one fell way short of 270, although they still drag out fake news when it’s plausibly rumored to be Kremlin-esque in origin.
The fact that Hillary Clinton was a failed candidate running on a failed platform and a failed strategy doesn’t seem to register with them. However, that isn’t going to change the occupant of the White House for at least another two years — and that fact, no doubt, will inspire many more zings from the current resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
