Trump Threatens Gov't Shutdown Could Last Years: 'We're Not Playing Games'

Share

President Donald Trump warned Democrats that the government shutdown could last for years unless they’re willing to fund a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border.

On Friday, Trump met with congressional leaders as the government shutdown stretched into its second week.

Unfortunately, they walked away from the meeting without a deal because Democrats are still unwilling to allocate $5 billion for a border wall.

Speaking with reporters after the meeting, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that Trump could stand firm for “months or even years.”

“We told the president we needed the government open. He resisted,” Schumer said. “In fact, he said he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time. Months or even years.”

Trump also spoke to reporters and confirmed Schumer’s claims.

“Absolutely I said that,” the president said.

“I hope it doesn’t go on even beyond a few more days,” Trump added.

Of course, he understands the necessity of the wall.

Some experts argue that a border wall would be effective in decreasing illegal immigration, which would undoubtedly make Americans safer.

Do you think Trump will eventually get the wall?

While not all illegal immigrants have bad intentions, there are bound to be violent criminals seeking to take advantage of the nation’s weak borders.

America’s border security is directly connected to its national security, which is why Trump has considered using emergency powers.

“We can call a national emergency because of the security of our country, absolutely. We can do it. I haven’t done it, I may do it,” the president said. “I may do it, but we can call a national emergency and build it very quickly.”

“This is national security we’re talking about, we’re not talking about games,” Trump added. “We’re not playing games, we have to do it.”

Democrats need to realize that Trump is a talented negotiator, and he will get the border wall one way or another.
