Trump's Lawyer Enrages Democrats With Bold Call to Action

Share

This would really set the liberal hair on fire.

A day after Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired Andrew McCabe, the disgraced former director of the FBI, for lacking “candor” about his contacts with the media (most people call that lying), an attorney for President Donald Trump is asking the Justice Department to go a step further:

Shut down special counsel Robert Mueller’s nearly year-old investigation into alleged “collusion” between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia.

In a statement reported by The Hill, Trump attorney John Dowd asked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to put an end to the Mueller probe, which has so far resulted in zero public evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians in any way.

“I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the brilliant and courageous example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia Collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe’s boss James Comey based upon a fraudulent and corrupt Dossier,” Dowd said.

The statement was referring, of course, to the infamous “Trump dossier,” a document created by a former British spy that was paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Since was the dossier was the key factor in the decision to appoint a special counsel in the first place, and it’s been thoroughly discredited in the course of the past year (especially its most salacious parts, which only Maxine Waters pretends to believe anymore), Dowd is demanding that the Justice Department put an end to the fiasco once and for all.

Democrats, who know full well that the special counsel’s investigation represents just about their only leverage on Trump, are full of grim warnings.

“Mr. Dowd’s comments are yet another indication that the first instinct of the president and his legal team is not to cooperate with Special Counsel Mueller, but to undermine him at every turn,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement Saturday, according to The Hill.

Should the Mueller investigation be ended now?

“The president, the administration, and his legal team must not take any steps to curtail, interfere with, or end the special counsel’s investigation or there will be severe consequences from both Democrats and Republicans.”

Right. And if the special counsel’s investigation is allowed to proceed unhindered, everything will be kumbaya and brotherhood on Capitol Hill, right?

What the Democrats are really afraid of is that every attack they’ve launched against Trump so far under the rubric of “Russia collusion” seems to be coming back somehow with Hillary Clinton’s name on it.

The dossier itself, which was published by the website BuzzFeed in its entirety a more than a year ago, has been found to be the creation of the Hillary Clinton campaign.

The firing of McCabe on Friday — one day before he was set to retire with a full, taxpayer-funded pension — was not an attack by the Trump White House, no matter how the media try to spin it. It was recommended by the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

And that recommendation came from an report by the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General that, as The Washington Post put it, “blasts McCabe for allowing two high-ranking bureau officials to sit down with the Wall Street Journal as the news outlet prepared a report in 2016 on an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s family foundation, then misleading the inspector general’s team about his actions.”

And it can’t be forgotten that Hillary herself was a major reason that McCabe’s wife got nearly $500,000 donated to her failed campaign for state Senate in Virginia back in 2015.

Basically, every major stumbling block the Trump presidency has faced has been the creation of either the Clinton campaign or the Obama presidency laying minefields for the new administration on its way out the door.  And every one of those obstacles has fallen apart with time and public scrutiny.

Sessions’ decisive firing of McCabe was one more nail in the coffin of the Trump impeachment dreams. The closing of the Mueller investigation could put an end to the long, national nightmare for good.

Sessions recused himself from the special counsel’s investigation at its birth, so the decision is Rosenstein’s, as deputy attorney general. It’s not likely he’ll end up going along with Dowd’s request, considering the political stakes.

But if he did, the liberal heads would start exploding.
