Every once in a while, a news story comes along that makes you wonder if the whole world has gone crazy. Frustratingly, those stories now seem to be once every few days.
Case in point: This week, the government of the United Kingdom announced that it is discouraging the term “pregnant women,” and is instead urging the United Nations to use the words “pregnant people” instead.
Apparently, acknowledging the biological fact that pregnancies occur in, er, women was just not progressive enough. After all, transgender people might be offended.

At issue, according to Fox News, is the U.N.’s International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which states that the death penalty should not be applied to “pregnant woman.”
That’s not diverse enough for the increasingly bananas Britain.
“We requested that the U.N. human rights committee made it clear that the same right [to life for pregnant women] extends to pregnant transgender people,” the Foreign and Commonwealth Office helpfully explained, according to Fox News.

Wait, wait! Why would women — even transgender women — need to be protected more so than men? If they’re different — unique, even — and in need of special protections, hasn’t the U.N. just admitted that men and women aren’t identical after all?
While we’re at it, why is the U.N. opposed to the death penalty for pregnant women? Could it be that even the bloodless bureaucrats of the U.N. recognize that an unborn baby has human rights that should be protected? Gasp! We can’t have that secret getting out.
Hilariously, as soon as Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office made the request to change “pregnant women” to “pregnant people,” it was liberal feminists who became the most enraged. But then, they’ve had a lot of practice.
“This is making women unmentionable,” Sarah Ditum, a self-described feminist and freelance writer, told the U.K. Times, according to Fox.
“Having a female body and knowing what that means for reproduction doesn’t make you ‘exclusionary,’” Ditum continued. “Forcing us to decorously scrub out any reference to our sex on pain of being called bigots is an insult.”

Girl power! But, ahhh, trans rights! Can’t decide! Isn’t it fascinating when the left implodes on itself?
A keen observer might notice the giant, glaring irony at the center of the entire kerfuffle: By insisting that “women” might exclude transgender people, the U.K. government has quietly admitted that being trans is not the same as being a woman.
It’s not the first time the taboo topic has come up in Britain. In late 2016, the British Medical Association issued a guidance to avoid calling pregnant women “expectant mothers,” because the term excluded trandsgenders. The BMA liked the “pregnant people” terminology too.
Of course, the entire situation could be avoided by taking a conservative approach and treating individual human beings as individual human beings, instead of checkbox demographic groups.

The left has become obsessed with a litany of bizarre categories for every conceivable flavor of fetish. We’ve entered a strange world where “playing pretend” must be protected at all costs, and a thousand conflicting definitions and laws have to be created to try to keep track of it all.
We’re creating chaos to justify a charade.
