After Media Plays up UN Laughter, Melania Comes to Husband's Defense

Share

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump gave a speech to the United Nations General Assembly that was a testament to American sovereignty and pride.

It was also a testament to Trump’s confidence and pride in his own time in office — a fact that was met with laughter from the U.N. delegates, at least at the beginning.

After Trump stated that “in less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country,” the assembly murmured and laughed.

“Didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s okay,” Trump laughed. The audience applauded as he recognized the unusual moment.

However, instead of commenting more on the poor manners of the assembly, he simply brushed off the response and moved forward.

His speech touched on many points, including fervently denouncing Iran and noting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s cooperation with the U.S.

What is notable about Trump going before the U.N. was his undaunted defense of American sovereignty in the face of the often unfriendly group.

The United Nations is not necessarily known to have warm feelings towards the U.S. — the country that plays host to the world body and pays most of its bills — but Trump stood sure and candid in his conviction of the dangers of globalism, and his guarantee of American independence.

Do you agree with Melania Trump about the president's speech?

“We will never surrender American sovereignty to an unelected, unaccountable global bureaucracy. America is governed by Americans,” he said during the speech.

“We reject the ideology of globalism, and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism.”

The audience didn’t laugh at that. After its initial reaction to the force of nature that is Trump, the assembly seemed to sober up.

After all, emissaries from several of the countries Trump censured were in the audience.

But the assembly’s disrespectful behavior early on in the speech paints a poor picture of the U.N. as a whole. While it was like water off a duck’s back to Trump, you almost wish he had called them out for their lack of professionalism.

However, first lady Melania Trump came to the president’s defense afterward as she was leaving the United Nations building in New York. When asked what she thought of the speech, she grinned at reporters and simply said, “fantastic.”

She seemed obviously pleased with her husband’s speech. This support and affection for him comes in contrast to how the left often tries to characterize her as disliking, or merely enduring, her husband.

The left’s weird fixation on the Trumps’ marriage often has the media scrambling to portray the couple’s relationship as unbalanced or secretly seething with upset. However, the two seem staunchly loyal to and supportive of each other, with the president often praising Melania for her charity work.

The United Nations assembly could learn a thing or two from the way the Trumps work together.
