Never underestimate the intelligence and capabilities of your pet. That’s the lesson one family learned when they went out of town and left their “Houdini” dog at an animal hospital in Stafford County, Virginia.
Travis Campbell, the dog’s owner, and his family were on vacation when they found out their 10-year-old dog was missing after a grand, unbelievable escape from the Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hospital, according to KTVI.
General, the Campbell family’s Great Pyrenees, managed to open the door of his kennel early Monday morning, but his adventure didn’t stop there, and most of it was caught on camera.

Surveillance video showed General opening several doors inside the facility, where he wondered around for nearly two hours before finally opening the hospital’s back door at 4:17 a.m, according to WTTG.
The last time the dog was seen on the surveillance video, he had just walked past a bench outside the clinic.
Fortunately, after the family shared pictures of the dog and announced his disappearance on social media, General was found in a nearby neighborhood, 15 hours after his grand escape.
“It’s been tough,” Campbell said about the incident. “He’s a little Houdini when it comes to opening doors. He can get a lot of doors open.”
The family explained that General was a clever dog, but they had never seen him do something as complex as escaping from a building.
“I knew that he could open doors and all that, but I didn’t think he would be able to get through the doors of the vet,” one of the Campbell children told WPXI.

According to his owner, General got a slight nick on his nose in his attempt to get out from his kennel.
“Basically, he spent a night and a half rehearsing trying to figure out how to open the door from the inside, which is how he got a little scratch on his nose,” he told WTTG. “It’s a trick to lift the latch from the inside and he figured it out and pushed on the door. Pretty impressive.”
General was a rescue who was adopted by the Campbell family five years ago.
“Everybody loves him,” Campbell said. “Anyone who sees him, especially kids, wants to hug on him because he is so big. He’s very special and a member of the family. I have six children who just love him and they treat him like their own brother.”
While we’re very impressed at how intelligent General is, we’re even more happy that he has been reunited with his family after his great escape.
The Campbell family is going to have to get creative in preventing him from escaping again.
