Watch: Iron Dome Comes to Life Amid Sirens, Panic in Rare Raw Footage

Share

If you’ve ever wondered just how effective Israel’s “Iron Dome” system is in action, this raw footage will definitely convince you.

For the uninitiated, the Iron Dome is a missile-defense system Israel has deployed to fend off rockets from terrorist groups and other actors.

Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the Iron Dome is “the world’s most used missile defense system, intercepting more than 1,500 targets with a greater than 90 percent success rate since being fielded in 2011,” according to Iron Dome contractor Raytheon.

“The system is effective day or night and in all weather conditions, including low clouds, rain, dust storms and fog. It features a first-of-its-kind multi-mission launcher, which is designed to fire a variety of interceptor missiles, depending on the threat.”

If you’ve ever wondered just what that looks like, the Israel Defense Forces posted a terrifying video to its Twitter account Monday night after one such attack.

“RAW FOOTAGE: The skies of southern Israel RIGHT NOW. Dozens of rockets are being fired from #Gaza at Israeli civilians,” the tweet read.

Amid the sirens and the confusion, the system did its job — although sadly, not without the loss of one life.

Do you think Israel should be more aggressive with militants in Gaza?

According to i24 News, a man was discovered “dead under the rubble of an apartment building in Ashkelon that sustained a direct missile hit shortly after midnight on Tuesday.”

He was “identified as 48-year-old Mahmoud Abu Asbah, a Palestinian resident of the West Bank town of Halhul, north of Hebron.”

The attacks, which included almost 400 rockets from Gaza, were part of a three-day strike against Israel after a ground operation in Gaza Sunday, which, according to i24, resulted in the deaths of one IDF soldier and seven Hamas fighters.

Israel has responded to the attacks with a series of strikes “throughout the Gaza Strip,” which have reportedly been successful in striking “over 150 military targets belonging to Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.” The attacks have resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians.

Hamas said that it would continue to launch rockets at Ashkelon and Beersheba — cities in the southern part of Israel — unless retaliatory bombing by Israel were to cease.

Thankfully, the Iron Dome seems to have limited damage from terrorist missile attacks, at least.

No, it isn’t perfect. But in a country besieged by militants in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, it’s an indispensable part of keeping the citizenry safe.
