Watch: Mob in UK Pummels Traffic Cop Before Stealing His Vehicle

Share

Outside of the sometimes-troubled region of Northern Ireland, most cops in the United Kingdom don’t carry guns. If you want to know how smart of an idea that is, just ask an on-duty traffic cop from Birmingham who was literally stomped by a group of hooligans who took his moped.

According to the U.K. Metro, video of the disturbing attack emerged Friday shortly after the assault took place.

“A video shows the helpless victim crying out ‘what are you doing?’ as the men repeatedly stamp on his head in the broad daylight attack in College Road, Alum Rock, Birmingham,” the Metro reported.

“The vile youths were seen laughing and taunting the man, who has been identified as an on-duty traffic warden, as they beat him in front of several onlookers who did nothing to intervene, but instead recorded the action with their phones.”

The attack began when the officer was punched by a man in a black hoodie.

He was then forcibly ripped from his moped and thrown onto the street.

As he’s on the ground, the police officer was kicked hard in the lower back by another member of the mob. Someone tried to rip his helmet off, which didn’t work. A good thing, too, since the man in the black hoodie decided to stomp on the officer’s head several times.

One of the onlookers can be heard saying, “Oi, you’re on camera, man. What you doing?” Well, among other things, what they were doing was taking the moped of the traffic officer, which they absconded with on video.

West Midlands Police released the pictures of five men who are being sought in connection with the assault.

Would such an attack have happened if this officer were armed?

“The warden, who was going about his job, was dragged from his moped before being kicked and stamped on. The gang then stole his vehicle,” the police said.

As for the traffic officer himself, he was hospitalized by the attack. His injuries weren’t serious, however.

“Members of the public were quick to share social media video footage with the police, and we are now formally circulating those images as we appeal for the public’s help to identify those involved as quickly as possible,” police said.

According to the West Midlands Police Facebook page, two arrests have been made in connection with the attack.

One man has been charged with assault, while another man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and released while the investigation continues.

“We have had a fantastic response from members of the public. We are working through the information we have received as a priority and anticipate we will be knocking doors very shortly,” the police said Monday.

Of course, it’s worth noting that this isn’t a frequent occurrence in the U.S., where officers are armed. Such an attack in Great Britain should hardly be surprising, however, given the U.K.’s crime rate. After all, its citizens can’t be legally armed, and its police officers aren’t usually armed, either. Why should we be shocked when criminals attack?
