Yale Being Investigated for Excluding Men in Favor of Women

Share

Yale University is being investigated for a raft of Title IX violations by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights due to policies that ensure male students don’t receive the same educational opportunities that female students do.

According to Campus Reform, the OCR is investigating “educational programs and scholarship opportunities that exclude men” at the New Haven, Connecticut-based Ivy League school.

“According to a letter dated April 26, the department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is investigating seven Yale initiatives, including the Yale Women Faculty Forum, the Working Women’s Network, the Yale University Women’s Organization, and the Yale Women’s Campaign School,” Campus Reform reported Monday.

“These initiatives allegedly provide, to varying degrees, scholarships, professional development, academic opportunities, and summer programs exclusively to female students and professors, the complaint alleges.”

Title IX, which was passed in 1972, stipulates that “(n)o person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

The complaint with the OCR was launched by University of Southern California lecturer Kursat Christoff Pekgoz.

“Yale University violates Title IX by funding/sustaining programs which practice discrimination in their admission/election practices,” Pekgoz wrote in his complaint, noting that men are now a minority on college campuses.

“Men are a minority at Yale University (48%) and nationwide enrollment rates for men are even lower (42.8%),” and “men are even less likely to graduate from college after initial enrollment,” read the complaint.

“Therefore, affirmative action for women in colleges is irrational: indeed, it would only stand to reason to implement affirmative action for male students,” he said, adding that he merely wanted the programs to be gender neutral.

Do you think this policy is discrimination?

Pekgoz says he was a feminist before he came to the United States, even working with a women’s group in Turkey to improve literacy.

However, he determined that the situation in the United States — at least as far as academia — was skewed disproportionately toward women.

“It is possible for a reasonable person to support the civil rights of women in one context (such as supporting the education of impoverished Turkish girls) and the civil rights of men in a different context (such as opposing affirmative action for women in colleges),” he said.

“Women are a solid majority in colleges. Male students are also more likely to drop out. Yale does not have any equivalent initiatives for men, even though men are a minority on campus,” Pekgoz said to Campus Reform.

“Hopefully the elimination (of women-only programs and scholarship opportunities) may eventually restore gender balance in American colleges,” he added.

Will Pekgoz succeed in this quest? We can only hope so, but we wouldn’t bet on it. Instead, we’d place our money on him being drummed out of academia posthaste — and I’m sure he knew that’s probably what was going to happen and did it anyway. Bravo, sir. And let’s hope the Department of Education gives this the fair hearing it deserves.

See, this gets to the heart of the issue. It’s about equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome. No amount of discrimination like the kind Yale’s engaged in will ever get us to that point. The left may not come around now, but they’ll have to eventually — because, as one prominent pundit is fond of saying, facts don’t care about your feelings.
