Daughter Hit by Train Saving Mother Who Was Pushed onto Tracks & Knocked Unconscious

Share

During childhood, we’re often asked, “Who is your hero?” We may respond with answers like “Superman” or “Captain America” or “Dad.”

But as young children, we can’t truly understand the meaning of the word. I don’t believe we can ever comprehend its true meaning until we have experienced heroism firsthand.

A 28-year-old woman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is being hailed a hero after committing an act so selfless that it saved her mother’s life.

Katie Wenszell was with her sisters and their mother, Susan, on an annual girls’ trip in Atlanta when the unthinkable happened.

Vacations are meant to be full of positive memories. But while waiting for a train at a MARTA station, things went horribly wrong for this family.

Susan shared what she remembered from that day with CNN, describing how one of her girls saw a man running down some steps at the station.

“We just thought he was running to catch the train. I remember being pushed,” she explained. “That’s all I remember. The rest of it is pretty blurry.”

According to reports, Katie saw her mom had been pushed by a man and jumped down on the tracks to save her from the oncoming train.

Are you amazed by this girl's bravery?

Her quick actions worked and the train went right over the 57-year-old, who only suffered minor injuries. Unfortunately, Katie, who was wearing a backpack, was not so lucky.

“She was caught and beaten between the railroad tracks and the undercarriage of the vehicle,” Jerry Wenszell, Katie’s dad, told Fox 6 Now.

The heartbroken father credits his wife’s survival to their daughter. He shared he believed his wife would have died had it not been for Katie’s bravery.

MARTA Police has since confirmed that the man who pushed Susan is 28-year-old Christopher Brooklin. It’s not been made clear what motivated his horrific actions.

Brooklin has been detained and is being held on several charges, including aggravated assault and battery.

Katie, who had recently earned her Master’s Degree and planned to teach in China, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

GoFundMe page created for Katie explained that she had to undergo multiple surgeries and that her recovery would be long, putting her dream of teaching overseas on hold.

The family is asking for donations and prayers at this time. We will keep them in our thoughts and hearts, and pray this heroic young woman will make a full recovery.
