Disabled Dad Who Can't Work Saves Pocket Change So Teen Daughter Can Buy Coffee

When 17-year-old Morgan Porterfield came home from work, her dad, Jim, told her, “Morgan, there’s a present on your bed for you.” When she read the note attached to the orange pill bottle, she immediately started crying.

In 1981 Jim was hit, head-on, by a drunk driver on his way to work. After being in a coma for six weeks and going through multiple surgeries, he suffered severe brain damage. He still deals with short-term memory loss, seizures, and limited use of his arms and legs.

Before the accident, he worked for the railroad doing mostly manual labor, but afterward, he was no longer able to do the same kind of work. He found a filing job for an oil and gas company where he worked for over 30 years until he was laid off just last year.

“He has always lived paycheck to paycheck but we always had a roof over our head and food on the table,” Krista, Morgan’s sister, said. “Despite all his disabilities, he is such an admirable man.”

Even though he doesn’t have much money to spare, he loves Morgan deeply and always thinks of ways to show her just how much she means to him… like the gift he left on her bed.

Morgan hadn’t given much thought to it, but she noticed that her dad had been intentionally saving his pocket change for the past month.

When she found the pill bottle on her bed, she realized what he was doing; the attached note read, “$11.19 – 6/1/18 Coffee Money Love, Dad.” Jim knew how much his daughter loved coffee and wanted to give her some money to buy her next cup.

“I read the note and I couldn’t help but cry. It was so sweet that he had thought about that and did that for me even though he doesn’t have much money himself,” Morgan said.

The teenager was so moved that she decided to share her dad’s sweet gift with Twitter. It has since been retweeted over 49,000 times!

The tweet read, “As some know my dad is mentally and physically handicapped and so especially now that he’s older he’s unable to work or earn an income but he’s been saving his pocket change for the past month for some reason and I thought nothing of it til I came home from work to this today❤️

Since the tweet went viral, Morgan and her family have set up a GoFundMe to help cover some medical cost for Jim since he is living off of disability now.

Morgan said that some of the funds will cover the cost of a chair lift so that her dad won’t need to struggle to get in and out of chairs.

She is absolutely overwhelmed by the number of support people have shown since the tweet went viral.

“It’s been a blessing to see his support and all the people that care about him and are touched by his story. I’m touched by just living with him. He remains so positive and thankful,” Morgan said. “It’s been amazing to see how God works in mysterious ways like this.”
