As the race for the presidency continues, so does speculation regarding who presumed Republican nominee Donald Trump will select as his running mate.
Some reports have listed former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as two leading possibilities. However, Trump spent the weekend ginning up speculation about two other potential VP choices. The New York billionaire spent Sunday with Indiana Governor Mike Pence, who also has several years of experience as a member of the House of Representatives.
Trump wrote of the meeting on his official Twitter account: “Spent time with Indiana Governor Mike Pence and family yesterday. Very impressed, great people!”

Spokesman for the governor Marc Lotter said the meeting was productive, although he said “nothing was offered” as far as a VP position. It is unknown how interested Pence would be in the position, as he has said he is not interested in discussing “a hypothetical” and is currently in a race of his own against former Indiana House Speaker, Democrat John Gregg.

The businessman was not finished, announcing on Twitter that he would spend Independence Day with Iowa Senator Joni Ernst.
“I look forward to meeting @joniernst today in New Jersey. She has done a great job as Senator of Iowa!” he wrote.

Like Pence and his spokesperson, Ernst refused to give specifics about the meeting, merely saying it was a “good conversation” and indicating she would be happy to continue to share her ideas for America with her party’s presumptive nominee.

It is now widely believed Trump’s VP choice will be between Gingrich, Christie, Ernst, Pence, Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, and Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton. Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah), was also thought to be a contender, but her name was erased from speculation when she recently announced she plans to skip the GOP convention in favor of campaigning in her district and going on a fact finding trip to Israel.
