On The View Monday morning, Whoopi Goldberg made the announcement that word had just come down that Officer Edward Nero had been found not guilty in the death of Freddie Gray. Nero was one of six Baltimore officers charged in the Gray case and was the second to be brought to trial. The trial of the first officer, William Porter, resulted in a hung jury.
Sunny Hostin, a former prosecutor, was on The View‘s panel and attempted to explain things from the viewpoint of a prosecutor, saying that in her opinion Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby may have acted too quickly in deciding to charge all six officers.
“When you look at it as a prosecutor,” Hostin said, “you really have to make a well-reasoned decision in terms of how to charge someone, and it takes a long time to put together murder cases against six police officers. … I’ve never seen an investigation done that quickly.”

She said that while she didn’t want to criticize another prosecutor’s decision too harshly, the haste of Mosby’s action may not have been the best strategy because if the case was rushed and that led to none of the cops being found guilty, then rightly or wrongly, the people of Baltimore would feel “that they don’t have justice.”
Goldberg followed Hostin’s words with some of her own, urging people upset with the verdict to try to control their anger and not resort to violence. “When we burn, we’re the ones who lose,” she said.

“This is the world we live in and this is going to happen,” Goldberg added. “We’re going to have to deal with all of this.”
Joy Behar chimed in, saying, “That’s a tragic story,” prompting Goldberg to lament, “It’s all tragic. Doesn’t matter who’s on the other side. It’s all tragic. Nobody wins.”
