In the wake of the horrific shooting in Orlando, Fox News host Gretchen Carlson took the opposite stance of many of her conservative colleagues by voicing her support for lawmakers to reinstate the ban on assault weapons.
In order to bolster her statement, Carlson cited a poll in which 58 percent of Americans wanted a ban on assault weapons. She asked if we really needed an AR-15 to hunt or protect our families.
“There’s no doubt Omar Mateen was able to kill so many people because he was firing an AR-15,” she said. “A military-style assault weapon, a weapon easier to buy in the state of Florida than buying a handgun. Florida sets a three-day waiting period for purchasing handguns, but the state mandates no waiting period for any gun that requires two hands to hold.”

Carson said she was in favor of people being able to carry firearms, but said she was with the majority and was “taking a stand.”
The ban on assault weapons expired in 2004, but attempts to bring it back have been denied by Congress. On a Twitter poll, she asked if congress should reinstate it — 89 percent of the respondents said “no.”

Carlson acknowledged most people would have a differing opinion, but asked, “Can’t we hold true the sanctity of the Second Amendment while still having common sense?”
