Why Did George Foreman Name All of His Sons George?

Share

Some parents choose to give their children names that correlate with a theme, like Hope and Faith, or Autumn and Summer. Others elect to name their children after a beloved relative, or even themselves.

However, it isn’t often that a parent chooses to use the same name for every child. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what legendary boxer George Foreman did.

Over the course of five different marriages, Foreman has had five sons and five daughters. Each son is named George, and one of his daughters is named Georgetta.

Many people have raised questions about Foreman’s naming decision. What could be the reasoning behind such an unconventional choice?

“I named all my sons George Edward Foreman,'” Foreman told CBN. “And I tell people, ‘If you’re going to get hit as many times as I’ve been hit by Mohammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Evander Holyfield — you’re not going to remember many names.’”

He also wrote on his website that his sons “would always have something in common.”

“I say to them ‘If one of us goes up, then we all go up together. And if one goes down, we all go down together,’” Foreman wrote.

Although you might assume that sharing a name with four of your siblings would make you feel less than special, Georgetta Foreman attests that that isn’t the case.

“He has 10 kids, but growing up he made sure that we all had our special time,” Georgetta told CBN.

“There was even a time when we all had our own days. There was a Georgetta day, or George the second day, or whatever. And he took that time out to make sure that that day you had whatever you wanted to eat, whatever you wanted to do and he took out time to get to know who we were and who we are now.”

Foreman himself is adamant that each of his sons and daughters has something unique to offer the world.

“You’ve got to look for all the things, the qualities in one kid. The worst thing in the world is to think, ‘I’ve got another daughter, I have another son.’ Each are different people,” Foreman said.

The siblings adopted their own nicknames to distinguish themselves from one another, according to People. The brothers are George Jr., “Monk,” “Big Wheel,” “Red” and “Little Joey.”

Although most of the siblings have remained out of the spotlight, Georgetta became a television producer and one of his other daughters, Natalia, pursued a singing career.

Another of his daughters, Freeda, followed in her father’s footsteps by pursuing a professional boxing career. She recently passed away at age 42.

As a world-renowned boxing champion and Olympic gold medalist, Foreman has a lot to be proud of. Of all his accomplishments, however, he seems to take the most pride in being a father to his ten children.

He even published a book all about it, titled “Fatherhood by George: Hard-Won Advice on Being a Dad.”

“One thing I’m most proud of, in my heart, are my children,” Foreman told CBN. “They’ve gone on, some of them, to stand the test, to get college education, and that’s the hardest thing in the world to achieve; but most of all they’re good parents, and that’s what I’m proud of.”
