Grieving Family Sees Viral Photo of Puppy in Cereal Box, Knows She's Meant for Them

Riverside County Animal Services in Jurupa Valley, California, recently went viral for posting a tear-jerking snapshot to social media. A puppy was inexplicably delivered to their shelter in a cereal box, of all things. The small dog was covered in fleas when she arrived.
The 9-week-old puppy, aptly named “Razz Berry,” was reportedly abandoned at a nearby park before someone brought her to the shelter.

“We have seen some creative pet carriers in our days,” the shelter wrote. “This @RealCapnCrunch cereal box has to be one of the oddest ways a pet came to us as an over-the-counter dropoff. We handled all its fleas and now hope an owner arrives.”
Response to the viral photo was overwhelming. So many people offered to adopt Razz Berry that the shelter hosted a lottery to choose her next family.
Riverside County Animal Services posted a heartwarming YouTube video about Razz Berry’s adoption process.
A grand total of 20 hopeful families arrived at the shelter on July 13 to draw a number from a box. The family who drew the highest number out of 100 would be chosen to adopt Razz Berry.
In the end, it was the Sheets family who drew the number 92.
The family was in tears when they realized they had the honor of bringing Razz Berry home. Teresa, Hayden and James Sheets shared the reason they were so eager to adopt.
On the same day they stumbled upon Razz Berry’s photo online, their beloved family dog, Ginger, passed away.
“I saw it the day we lost Ginger, and I was like, ‘Oh it’s too soon,’” Teresa said.
However, the Sheets family ultimately decided to take a chance on the little white dog. Coincidentally, the family was hoping for a pet they could name “Salt.”
“This is going to sound ridiculous, but we always name our animals after seasonings,” Hayden said. “We had Ginger, we have another dog, it’s a Maltese Yorkie mix, and that dog’s named Pepper.”
However, the family admitted that the name “Razz Berry” might just stick. Regardless, the Sheets and Razz Berry — who just so happens to be a Maltese/Yorkshire terrier mix — seem like a match made in heaven.
