HS Player Throws Down Insane Dunk That Would Be Impressive for an NBA Star

Share

Thanks to social media, we now have access to sports highlights from all over the world that we never would have seen before.

We couldn’t watch highlights of Michael Jordan at Laney High School in North Carolina some 40 years ago, as not only was social media not around, the internet wasn’t even established yet.

But today we can see highlights all the way down to the high school level, and they can be viewed in a matter of seconds after the play happens.

The latest viral sports highlight comes courtesy of Anthony Jones Jr., who plays at Humboldt High School in Tennessee.

Jones benefitted from a teammate’s missed 3-pointer in a recent game as he went up, and over, a defender to throw down an NBA-caliber putback dunk.

The poor defender did his best to box out Jones, but his best wasn’t good enough and he ended up being on a poster instead.

Some would say this play was just two points and it would have had the same result as a layup, which is true.

But it’s the effect the play has on the game that can’t be measured. You can see the crowd going crazy after the play, and those types of dunks can bring about as much momentum as an 8-0 scoring run.

Other basketball fans also realize the magnitude of a play like that, and it has become a hit on social media. Overtime’s tweet of the video has generated nearly 1,800 likes and 500 retweets.

One fan even captured a screenshot of the exact moment when Jones went over his defender and seemingly rode him to the hoop for the slam.

Jones’ putback dunk rivals anything that has been seen in the NBA, although many would say that Allen Iverson’s putback vs. the Toronto Raptors is still the gold standard.

Iverson, who was 6 feet tall on his best day, went up for the slam over the 6-foot-11 Marcus Camby in a play that looked similar to Jones’.

Is that the best dunk you've ever seen in a high school game?

Iverson was the first pick of the 1996 NBA draft and Camby was No. 2, so Iverson being just a little better than Camby continued well after their names were called by David Stern.

Jones is ranked by MaxPreps as the 45th best player in Tennessee, so he might never reach the level that Iverson did. But he can take solace in the fact that he has a dunk that will forever be compared to one by a Hall of Famer.
