Jim Kelly's wife gives emotional update on husband's battle with cancer

Share

Jim Kelly recently scheduled a “checkup” after “something came up” in his ongoing battle with oral cancer.

WIVB-TV reported that whatever that something was, it wasn’t the kind of something that shows up on MRI or CT scans and signals the end.

Jill Kelly posted on Instagram, giving an update on her husband’s condition.

Jill’s post said, “Double thumbs up! MRI and CTScans are clear.

“Still working through major pain management, but PRAISE THE LORD, no evidence of cancer. And can I just say, Jim’s brothers are amazing!

“I’ve watched them stand with Jim in good times and bad. I’ve witnessed a love between siblings that is remarkable. What a blessing to be part of such an amazing family.

“Thank you Pat, Ray, Ed, Danny and Kevin for being an example of what a loving, devoted family should look like. Add your humor and faith to the mix and we have everything we need.

“Love you guys so much!”

Pain is one thing — Jim Kelly used to get planted in the turf in football stadiums by large men trying to knock his head off in an era before the NFL started protecting quarterbacks with all kinds of rules, so he’s no stranger to pain.

Cancer is another, and for Kelly to remain free of it, for the time being, is a testament to the skill with which his doctors did their work when Kelly had surgery on his jaw in March.

At the ESPY Awards, Kelly gave an inspirational speech in which he focused on his “Four Fs” — faith, family, friends and fans — and the second of those four was on display in spades at Jim’s medical appointment.

From his wife to his kids to his brothers, Kelly has the kind of support that serves as an object lesson to anyone with a friend or family member fighting the battle against cancer; they are role models for us all.

Kelly is expected to be able to eat solid foods again in September, and as one Twitter user pointed out back at the ESPYs, something that is the benchmark for Kelly’s battle, “Get that man a steak!”
