Joe Biden's ‘Black Pride’ Comments Are Coming Back To Haunt Him

Share

Former Vice President Joe Biden, a possible contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, once argued that integration would keep black Americans from fully embracing their identities and rejected busing as an attempt to desegregate schools.

“I think the concept of busing … that we are going to integrate people so that they all have the same access and they learn to grow up with one another and all the rest, is a rejection of the whole movement of black pride,” then-Sen. Biden said in 1975 after facing criticism from white voters, The Washington Examiner reported Friday.

Desegregation is “a rejection of the entire black awareness concept,” Biden said, according to the Examiner. Biden was a Delaware senator from 1973 to 2009.

His statements follow those he made during his 1972 run for Senate when he supported the federally mandated practice of busing.

Biden previously claimed he knew segregation and busing were terrible things, but flip-flopped on the issue following voter backlash, according to the Examiner.

He described busing in his 2007 biography as a “liberal train wreck” that tore people apart in the 1970s, the Examiner reported.

He’s likely to face questions about those comments if he enters the Democratic field.

“People have to be held accountable,” said University of Cleveland urban studies professor Ronnie Dunn, according to the Examiner.

“We all evolve in our thinking and grow, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to have to answer for our positions we held.”

Biden said in September 2008m after he was selected as the Barack Obama’s vice presidential candidate, that the fight for civil rights has been a staple in his political career.

“The struggle for civil rights was the animating political element of my life,” Biden said, according to The New York Times.

Biden could pose a significant threat to President Donald Trump’s chances to serve a second term in the Oval Office, according to South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.

“I’m not underestimating Joe Biden,” Graham said in early December. “I like Trump’s chances, but don’t take anything for granted.”

Biden himself thinks he deserves the job.

“I think I’m the most qualified person in the country to be president,” Biden said in early December.

Biden ran for president in 1988 and 2008 but did not receive the nomination.

He is considering running for president in 2020 but hasn’t officially declared.

Biden recently admitted to liking Republicans, saying that it could pose a problem for his possible 2020 run for office.

“One of my problems, if I were to ever run for president, is that I like Republicans,” Biden said.

Democratic Sens. Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren have all officially declared their 2020 run for president the party nomination, along with four others.

Racial questions are likely to play a big role in the Democratic primary contests.

Harris opened her 2020 presidential campaign by speaking largely about racism. “I’m running to fight for an America where no mother or father has to teach their young son that people may stop him, arrest him, chase him or kill him because of his race,” Harris said.

Harris announced her official presidential bid on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Booker announced his candidacy on Friday, the first day of Black History Month.
