Justice: Remember the Girl Who Called BP Agents Part of KKK? She's Being Charged

Share

Here’s a quick tip to stay out of trouble: if you’re going to commit a crime, don’t livestream it to all of your Facebook friends.

Two of the students who broadcast their live harassment of Border Patrol agents visiting the University of Arizona earlier this year are learning this lesson the hard way as university police have now made their decision.

According to a statement from university President Robert C. Robbins, the students will be charged with “interference with the peaceful conduct of an educational institution.”

“The UA Police Department will continue to investigate the incident for additional criminal violations, and the Office of the Dean of Students is reviewing potential violations of the student code of conduct,” Robbins stated. “There also will be a probe into actions involving UA employees.”

The charges levied on the students definitely seem to fit the bill for their harassment of the Border Patrol agents.

The protesters livestreamed themselves interrupting a meeting of the school’s Criminal Justice Association where the agents were speaking.

With the protesters following the agents and chanting “murder patrol,” the videos quickly went viral on social media. Viewer discretion advised- these videos contain foul language.

Do you think there should be criminal charges in this case?

With many colleges allowing or actually encouraging this kind of behavior, it’s refreshing to see one understanding that freedom of speech and expression is a two-way street.

While people are allowed to express their feelings and thoughts, that should not bleed over into actively shutting down someone else’s most basic rights to speech.

Robbins’ statement emphasized that its commitment to free speech is at the “core” of the university’s reaction.

“The student club and the CBP officers invited by the students should have been able to hold their meeting without disruption,” Robbins’ statement said. “Student protest is protected by our support for free speech, but disruption is not.”

It seems the students could have avoided this entire mess by simply following the rules.

Nobody told them they couldn’t protest, the university simply required they do it without disrupting the meeting.

Instead, they chose to discard even the premise of debate and simply shout their slogans at the Border Patrol agents.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the way discourse on college campuses is going.

For the past few years, conservative groups and speakers have been harassed on American campuses in much the same way as the Border Patrol agents visiting the University of Arizona were.

Liberal insanity seems to have reached a tipping point, however.

Left-wing students are not the only ones paying for their education, and some colleges are realizing that.

Like the University of Arizona, some may soon follow in enforcing rules to protect everyone’s free speech.
