Newborn's Photo Shoot Features Soldiers Her Dead Daddy Fought with in Afghanistan

Share

Soldier Christopher Harris was killed in August 2017 by a “vehicle-borne improvised explosive device” in Afghanistan. He was 25 and found out just days before that he was going to be a father.

His wife, Britt Harris was six weeks pregnant when she heard the news. As she dealt with her loss, she wanted to keep Chris’ unit connected by involving them in the gender reveal in October.

“The gender reveal was my idea to keep the guys involved with the pregnancy since they were still deployed and so disconnected from everything happening back home,” Britt said.

She sent a box of confetti poppers to Afghanistan, and they shot them off in front of an American Flag. They were overjoyed to see that Baby Harris was going to be a girl.

On March 17, Britt gave birth to Christian Michelle Harris, named in honor of her late husband. Christian was born on the same day that Chris’ unit came home from Afghanistan.

Bitt was shocked to see how much her daughter looked like her father.

“She is his twin! She looks nothing like me,” Britt told KTVU. “Same Blue eyes. Dark hair. Tan skin. Same shaped nose. Everything.”

She decided to have the unit be a part of a newborn photo shoot with her daughter the day after Memorial Day at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden in the Harris family’s hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The result was heartwarming. All the soldiers quickly fell in love with Christian.

“It’s comforting,” Britt told TODAY. “They all mention Chris, tell stories about him, and seeing them go from big macho Army men to baby-talking and waiting in line to be the next one to snuggle Christian truly warms my heart. It’s so wonderful to see how much she is loved.”

Britt wants to be sure little Christian knows the kind of man her father was and how much he meant to all the men and women he served with.

“I’ll tell her that no matter where the Army takes all of them, there was a time when they were all together here and showed up just to see her,” Britt said. “How special she was to them all and how loved she was by them all through the pregnancy, and even more so now.”

Christian will truly see how loved she is when she looks back at these photos one day. They are a reminder of how precious life is and how great a sacrifice there is for freedom.
