13-Year-Old Struck by Lighting, Placed in Coma. Mom Films Miracle When He Starts Walking

Storms in Arizona can form quickly and get violent in a matter of minutes. You can have clear skies one moment, and the next you’re running for cover as it sounds like the sky is falling.

Two 13-year-old boys in El Mirage, Arizona, were at a park Wednesday evening when that happened. The two were in an open field at a park with other people, when it suddenly got dark and started storming.

As they sought shelter, lightning struck the two boys. Fortunately there were people nearby who noticed and ran over to help.

“Me and my buddy, we called 9-1-1 and we just came and tried to help out,” said Victor Valencia, one of the people who ran to their aid.

“There was a guy before me giving CPR and then I kind of took over and helped out the kid, and as soon as he catch some air, I felt a little better but that’s when the paramedics came in. They took over.”

The boys were whisked to the hospital. One was in more serious condition than the other.

“Unfortunately this evening our Fire Department received a call Involving two 14 year old male juveniles that were struck by lightning at the park located at Flores St. & Moreno,” wrote the El Mirage Police Department on their Facebook page.

“Our crews responded and treated both patients. Both were transported to local pediatric hospitals.” While the police department said the boys were 14, the Go Fund Me page said at least one was actually 13.

Javier Tapia, one of the teens, was released from the hospital shortly after his arrival, and is doing okay.

“I got struck, I didn’t feel myself fall down,” Tapia said, according to AZ Family. “It felt like I was floating. But I was still able to hear everything.”

Josiah Wideman, the other teen, stayed in a medically-induced coma until Friday. He had a concussion and a fractured skull, and the fact that he’s awake and walking now is amazing.

He’s still got a ways to go before he’s back to his old self, but it’s a miracle that he’s even here after such a freak accident.
