Army Medic and Nurse Wife Spring into Action Mid Flight When Passenger Loses Consciousness

Share

Plenty of professions are helpful in our daily, outside-of-work lives, but one of the most useful and practical is that of health care professionals.

If you have a friend or family member who is a nurse, you’ve probably pestered them with all sorts of questions. If you’re a nurse yourself, you’re probably used to being inundated with these queries.

People generally feel safer when they know nurses are around. And that was certainly true for one person on a recent flight to Fukuoka, Japan, last Friday, who was helped by two 27-year-olds.

Lam Guo Wei and Audrey Chia are a dynamic duo. A married couple, he’s a medic with the Singapore Armed Forces and she’s a nurse.

They were seated near the bathroom on the plane, which is how they noticed when a man collapsed directly behind them. Being well-trained to handle this kind of situation, they lept up and began assessing the man.

The two got him to an area on the plane with more space, and they asked him questions through an interpreter.

“Our clients, who are qualified medical professionals, sprang into action like it’s second nature,” John Lin, who was traveling with the two, later wrote.

“And indeed it was! Seeing them saving a life real time, as husband and wife was an awe inspiring experience.”

Another doctor was on board, and he also assessed the man. Determining that the event was not life-threatening, he told the airline there was no need for an emergency landing.

“This was the second time I’ve encountered (an emergency) on board a commercial flight,” Lam said. “Since my wife and I are medically trained and qualified to aid someone, we did not hesitate to step forward.”

“Professionalism in what we do as medical professionals guided my actions during the assessment and delivery of care,” Lam continued.

“While Ethics, not just SAF, but also the Nursing Ethics brought out the automatic response in rendering assistance when required.”

“A part of the Medics pledge always follows me all the time, which is: I will save lives and reduce suffering; show care, concern and compassion to all those I treat,” Lam concluded.

He and his wife certainly did that. Thank you for being observant and ready to help those in need, both on and off the job!
