Breaking News: Age 97 Prince Philip Reportedly Pulled from Wreck After Crash Overturns Car

The royal family is a phenomenon for many Americans. They’re celebrities of a sort, alluring and unreachable, and yet many of us love to watch from afar as they live in luxury and continue their traditions.

But just as with any celebrities, their high profile doesn’t keep them from everyday concerns or accidents. On Thursday, Jan. 17, around 3:00 p.m. GMT, Prince Philip was in a car accident.

At 97 years old, the Duke of Edinburgh is not the young man he used to be, but he walked away from the crash relatively unscathed.

According to the BBC, the prince was driving his Range Rover near the Sandringham Estate when the accident occurred. It involved another car and two other people, who walked away with minor injuries.

Prince Philip? He walked away without any noticeable injuries, despite the fact that his car had rolled over.

Witnesses confirmed that he looked to be in good shape physically, but that he (understandably) was quite shaken up after the ordeal.

“The Duke of Edinburgh was involved in a road traffic accident with another vehicle this afternoon,” the Buckingham Palace stated, according to The Guardian. “The duke was not injured. The accident took place close to the Sandringham Estate. Local police attended the scene.”

It is unclear whether or not anyone else was in the vehicle with Prince Philip at the time, and he’s gone back to the estate. He’s since been examined by a doctor, and reportedly has not suffered any injuries.

There have been many rumors concerning his health in the past few years, with people wondering whether his decision to step down from his public station in 2017 was masking some bigger health issues.

Since then, he has skipped several big, traditional events, including the Sandringham Christmas Day service and a Maundy church service at St. George’s Chapel.

The Archbishop of York turned to Twitter shortly after hearing about the prince’s crash, publicizing his prayer for the duke.

“Almighty God,” he tweeted, “the Fountain of all Goodness, We humbly beseech thee to bless Philip Duke of Edinburgh: Endue him with thy Holy Spirit; enrich him with the Heavenly Grace; prosper him with all happiness; and bring him to thine everlasting kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

While this incident has no doubt rattled the prince, he seems to be faring well based on all reports so far and has the best care at his fingertips.
