Christian Artists Lauren Daigle & Tori Kelly Declare Love for Jesus on Stage at Grammys
The road to success is rarely easy or short for those who seek it, and takes a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and — if you ask Tori Kelly or Lauren Daigle — Jesus.
While both women have been nominated for awards in the past, this year they both took home not one, but two Grammys apiece.
Tori Kelly went home with “Best Gospel Album” for her album “Hiding Place.” Her song “Never Alone,” which she co-wrote with the well-known Kirk Franklin, got her “Best Gospel Song.”
For Kelly, these wins have been a long time coming. She started in music at the tender age of 12, quickly signing a record deal and gaining traction on YouTube by age 14.
Some people remember her short stint on “American Idol,” but clearly she didn’t need a win on that show to become what she is now. Even though she’s 26 now and enjoying this accomplishment, she said that it took her back during a backstage interview with NY Daily News.
“I kinda went back to when I was a little girl watching the Grammys,” she said, “and I wasn’t expecting to have this, but they said my name and I was like, wow, I’ve been dreaming about this moment since I was a kid, you know, wondering if it will happen, when it will happen, and so I immediately got emotional.”
“I just remembered, as a kid, there were a lot of doors that closed. I’ve been doing music since I was like 12 years old. And so, just thinking back on all those times that I was rejected and had the door closed in my face.”
“This is for any girl who’s going through that and feels that they’re not good enough,” she continued. “That’s the immediate thought that came into my head.”
She thanked Kirk Franklin for all his help and for supporting her passion. She said this album was a result of “taking a step back and realizing, you know, I want to do a project that’s really close to my heart and something I’m really passionate about.”
She made sure to specifically thank Jesus, as well, before she exited the stage, still shocked by her win. She later took to Instagram, praising God for her accomplishments.
“I just know that I’m so incredibly grateful & will never forget this feeling. All glory to God,” she wrote.
Lauren Daigle also praised Jesus for giving her the gift of music as she accepted the awards for “Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song” for her song “You Say,” and “Best Contemporary Christian Music Album” for her album “Look Up Child.”
“This record, I’ll tell ya, it came from a season of just realizing that we’re just supposed to look up,” she said during her speech. “With everything we do we’re just supposed to have love, and I love that music gives us the opportunity to look up.”
“It gives us the opportunity to spread love to the entire world, and so I just wanna thank Jesus for letting me be a part of this, that he’s put a voice in my throat. For everybody who’s a writer, whoever’s involved in all this, I think it’s just such a gift. This community of music, I love it so so much and I’m so incredibly grateful.”
