Cop Buys Little Boy Shoes After Finding Him Playing in Bloody, Dirty Socks

When you go about your business from day to day, how often do you stop to take in your surroundings and just notice what’s happening around you?

How often do you pause, get out of your own head and notice all the individuals nearby with their own hopes, dreams, fears and struggles?

It can be difficult to slow down and stop following our to-do lists and putting all our focus on what we need to do to reach that next rung on the social ladder, but it’s a good exercise.

Police are generally observant. It’s an incredibly useful skill to have in daily life, but one that’s crucial to police work.

And they see all sorts of things, including a lot of things we wouldn’t want to see. Their job is to see, which means that they will catch things that others missed.

Like these two officers. They noticed a young boy, a boy that others had probably seen but hadn’t paid real attention to.

This kiddo caught their attention because he had no shoes. Odd? Yes. But this is a kid. Trying to keep shoes on one of those can be a herculean feat.

So the two officers stopped and asked him where his shoes were. He said that he only had one pair, and they were too small for him now.

Not only was he padding around in grimy socks, he’d managed to cut his foot, making his sock dirty and bloody.

Aside from that being an unsanitary situation and putting the child at risk for infection, the fact that he had no shoes tugged at the officers’ heartstrings and hinted at a larger issue.

The Tukwila Police Department’s Facebook page posted about the incident later, calling the two officers “Sergeant Modest” and “Officer Bashful” because they didn’t want the spotlight.

Before doing anything else, the policemen attended to the immediate concern: “the sergeant cleaned up and patched his foot with his first aid kit,” the post read. But they weren’t stopping there.

“The sergeant ran out and grabbed a pair of shoes for him while the officer kept him and his friends company. He came back with not only a pair of shoes, but also with a bunch of popsicles because what isn’t better than a cold popsicle on a hot summer day?!”

“The officer helped to tie his new friend’s shoes and they all enjoyed a popsicle together before parting ways.”

This wasn’t a gesture that cost thousands of dollars. It didn’t require a kidney or a lifelong pledge. It was simple, it was small, but it changed someone’s life for the better.

It wasn’t just the patched-up foot, which met an immediate need, or the pair of shoes, which met a longer-term need: It was the popsicles. Totally “unnecessary” in a utilitarian sense, but they were the cherry on top of the kindness sundae.

It’s encouraging to see cases like this, especially where the do-gooders don’t want their actions paraded. Use this as an example of a way that you can reach out and help others, meeting the needs — even the little ones — of the people around you.
