Cop Shamed by Woman at Burger King, But He Has Perfect Response

Share

It’s easy to get caught up in our own thoughts, sequestered in our bubbles and our circle of acquaintances, and assume other people know the things we know, have had the experiences we’ve had, and act the way we act.

This can lead to some awkward situations when people do things that we assume we wouldn’t do if we were in their shoes. But that’s just the problem — we’re not in their shoes, and they have their own set of knowledge, experiences, and actions that we’ll never know about if we don’t ask.

As long as we keep these observations to ourselves and extend grace to people in other situations, we’re ok. But as soon as we assume and verbalize our objections without reflecting, we not only hurt the people we speak to, we look like real fools.

One cop experienced treatment of this variety when he stopped at a fast-food restaurant to pick up a quick bite to eat.

Andre Owen, a policeman with the Sussex Police, had had a busy shift, and this was the first pause he’d taken all morning. He’d ended up far away from his station and had at least two hours of driving ahead of him.

“Five minutes after starting my shift,” he said, according to the Daily Record, “I was assigned to a serious job in Brighton. I dealt with that and then had to drive nonstop to Oxford as part of the same job, single crewed.”

“Half an hour into the return journey, I stopped at a service station for my first toilet stop of the day! While there, I also got a double whopper meal, apple pie, Coke and a cappuccino.”

Planning to refuel after the quick stop, the mood was totally ruined when a woman who was also at the restaurant decided to criticize his life choices.

It started subtly at first, with the woman shooting him looks while she chowed down on her own meal. The mean mugging didn’t stop there.

“I collected the food and as I left she said something similar to ‘whilst you’re in here stuffing your face, there’s criminals that need catching out there,’ I smiled, and just walked away without saying a word,” he later recounted.

But the comment stung, and the exhausted policeman took to Twitter, crafting a response to justify his stop.

“To the lady that scorned me for buying food on duty,” he tweeted, “I’ve not stopped since 07:05 this morning, not even for toilet break. I’m over 100 miles from my station and I’m due off in 45 mins…. with a two hour journey at least!!!! # policearehumantoo.”

Of course, he received overwhelming support from commenters (aside from those who wondered why he’d choose such an establishment as Burger King), but they also wondered why he let such a jab get to him.

“Physically tired, hungry and single crewed,” was his response. “Hard to ignore at the time if I’m honest. But clearly she is in the minority.”

Starving cops are no use to anyone, but did the lady stop to get to know him or his situation before leveling her condescension at him? No. She should have kept her mouth closed and continued chewing her food, for her own sake.

On the way home, Owen stopped to help a stranded family and ended up running into a 12-hour work day — so it was a doubly good thing he stopped to get food!
