Deer Stands Up on Back Legs, Knocks Apples from Tree Using Only His Antlers
“Necessity is the mother of invention.” My own mother used to tell me that when I was young and would complain about a problem I had that I wanted her to fix, as her way of telling me to figure it out myself.
And it’s true: When you face a new situation that seems impossible, you start trying to find a way to tackle the problem with what you have available to you.
Many times, if you just sit and think about it for a while, you’ll come up with a solution that doesn’t involve relying on (or annoying) the people around you.
That applies to more creatures than just ourselves. Plenty of animals have taken this proverb to heart and have found clever ways to accomplish their goals — especially if those goals involve food.
Food is a major motivator for animals. How do you train most dogs? Bribe them with a treat.
How do you make a critter your best friend? Feed them regularly, and they start to trust you.
There are plenty of methods animals have learned to get what they want. Take, for example, this bird.
It looks like a green heron, but whatever it is, it’s clever. It takes a piece of bread, floats it out on the water, and lets the fish take a few nibbles.
Then it proceeds to pick up the bread and place it back in the water several times — each time, placing it a bit closer until the fish tries to nab it from basically under the bird’s beak.
With a swift lunge, the bird grabs the fish from the water and hauls its prize onto the shore, where it swallows its prize meal.
This deer isn’t so different. He looks like a baby because of his spots, but there are species of deer that retain spotting. Plus, these deer are clearly pretty tame and not acting like wild deer.
According to Caters Clips, a man named Simon Wildgust saw the deer while he was in Dieppe, France. He noticed the odd jumping and head-shaking, but soon realized what the critter was up to.
The buck would thrash his antlers through the tree branches, knocking young apples to the ground, which he would then gobble up. The other deer with him seemed to appreciate his efforts as well, waiting for any to fall in their direction.
