8-Year-Old Boy Heroically Saves 2-Year-Old Brother from Pit Bull Attack
People get dogs for different reasons. Dogs of different varieties are often used for companionship, guardians or jobs.
They’re readily trainable and a great deal depends on their handlers as far as temperament goes — but that doesn’t mean accidents don’t happen.
Most dogs, regardless of breed, have strong protection and prey drives. They vigilantly guard their owner’s territory, and almost can’t help chasing if something is behaving like prey.
The issue gets more heated when the topic turns to controversial breeds, such as the dogs that fall under the catch-all term “pit bull.” Advocates of the breeds claim that their pits are friendly and would never hurt a fly — which is probably true.
But that doesn’t discredit the fact that many people have also been attacked by them, and those people’s experiences are just as valid.
The truth is, you cannot really label an entire category of dogs with the term “aggressive,” because so much depends on the nurturing the dog receives. But if you’re an owner of these breeds, you also have a duty to make sure your pups are a shining example of the wonderful companionship features of the breeds.
Dogs with no training or a strong hunting drive can be just as bad as dogs with bad owners, regardless of dog size or shape. It’s unclear which of those was a factor in this instance.
The attack took place in Munster, Indiana, when mom Tatiana Moore was visiting a neighbor with her 8-year-old, Sacha, and her 2-year-old, Micha.
Somehow, another neighbor’s two dogs — pit bulls, according to WBTV, although there are no photos to confirm — got loose from their fenced yard and approached the mother and her youngest son.
They began to attack Micha. They could have attacked because he was small, or perhaps because he was frightened, running away, or screaming — all things that light up the “hunting prey” part of a dog’s brain.
“Out of nowhere, these two dogs showed up,” Sacha said. “My mom was pulling it back like a tug of war. It made me feel angry and sad, so I came to the rescue.”
Apparently the dogs were licking and biting at them, tearing at their clothes and, according to the mom, one had her son’s head in its mouth.
Sacha decided to jump in to save his little brother, and tried to distract the two dogs.
“He was yelling, ‘Leave my brother. Leave my brother,'” Tatiana said.
Because of his intervention, Sacha was bitten in the leg. Compared to his other injuries, he said this attack has been the worst so far.
“I fell down a tree house and I got choked up by a hamburger,” Sacha said, “so that is my worst one.”
Thankfully, Sacha managed to take the brunt of the attack and his brother went unhurt. The dogs have been taken to a shelter for a 10-day quarantine, and the owner has stated that though they’ve only ever been friendly before, she’s probably going to get rid of them.
The owner was given citations and police are determining whether more action needs to be taken.
The victims in this case don’t want anything to happen to the dogs, they just (understandably) don’t want them to get out again.
