Woman Walks 2 Miles with Skull Fractures, Covered in Blood After Being Mauled by Grizzly Bear

Share

If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. If you hike with bears, you might get mauled.

Amber Kornak, a 28-year-old woman with a passion for wildlife, got her dream job of researching grizzly bears in Montana.

She must have known the potential danger she was getting herself into. No one is a fan of bears — especially grizzlies — without knowing how dangerous they are.

On Thursday, May 17, Kornak was out by herself in the Cabinet Mountains as part of her gig as a Grizzly Bear Wildlife Technician.

A grizzly bear came up behind her while she was working and attacked her. Fortunately, she was carrying bear spray with her and managed to scare the large bear off — but not before it had done some major damage.

She ended up with wounds on her back, neck and head as well as two skull fractures. Obviously in pain and bleeding, after the bear left, she had to trek back out if she wanted to get help.

Despite her injuries, she managed to hike two miles to her car and get medical attention. She was flown to Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

Doctors worked for four hours to fix up Kornak. They removed bone chips and inserted metal plates and screws to stabilize her skull.

Her friend Jenna Hemer set up a Go Fund Me for the young woman and has kept people updated on her status.

“Her condition is now stable,” Hemer wrote, “and she is recovering in the ICU where they can keep her comfortable with pain medications and monitor her for seizures (from the brain swelling) and watch for signs of infection (from the extent of her wounds).”

“Anyone who knows Amber knows that she is fierce,” Hemer continued, “and will fight like hell to recover as quickly as possible.”

“However, this has created quite an obstacle for her. Her family and friends are reaching out in order to help her with her monthly bills while she is out of work indefinitely.”

“No donation is too small, and would be greatly appreciated along with your thoughts and prayers.”

Kornak clearly has incredible strength since she managed to control her fear and pain enough to hike out of the wilderness in her state. Hopefully with that sort of grit, she’ll be back to her dream job in no time.
