Meghan Markle Breaks Tradition with Who She Wants to Walk Her Down Aisle at Wedding

Share

Simply the engagement of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle signaled a break from the norm in the royal family.

She is an American, after all, as well as being a divorcee and a woman of mixed-race.

She recently spent Christmas with the royal family. Tradition dictates that only those who have already married into the family attend, but Queen Elizabeth made an exception in allowing Markle to join the celebrations.

Harry described the day as “fantastic.” And now rumors are floating of more breaks from tradition in the air.

This time, it has to do with the ceremony itself. The couple will marry May 19 at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

While most women have their fathers walk them down the aisle if they are still alive, Meghan reportedly plans to have her mother escort her.

The actress is known to be particularly close with her mother, Doria Ragland, a yoga teacher.

In a Mother’s Day tribute to Ragland on Instagram, Meghan shared a photo of the two at her mother’s graduation with a master’s in social work.

“Always proud of this beautiful woman,” she wrote.

Her father, Thomas Markle, was an award-winning television lighting director. He now lives in Mexico and is said to prefer to be out of the spotlight.

The couple divorced many years ago, but they issued a joint statement after the engagement.

In it, the parents wished Harry and Meghan “a lifetime of happiness.”

And when a reporter met up with Dad in Mexico, he was said to be delighted at the mention of attending the wedding.

Reports have varied on whether Harry and Dad have met in person, but they have at least talked.

Harry has met Ragland several times. Last fall, Harry, Meghan, and her mother attended the closing ceremonies of the Invictus Games.

There is no official word yet on whether Mom or Dad will walk Meghan down the aisle, only oodles of speculation, along with more speculation that this won’t be the only tradition Meghan may choose to break at her wedding. What will come next? Stay tuned.
