Steve Irwin's Son Undergoes Emergency Surgery

Share

Anyone hearing the phrase “emergency surgery” might feel their breath catch for a second. Your mind immediately fears the worst.

And in a family that’s already suffered a deep loss, it might even be more difficult to hear those words.

Thankfully, though, not all emergency surgeries are worthy of those worst thoughts.

Robert Irwin and his famous family found that out early this year when he underwent emergency surgery in Australia. The reason? Appendicitis.

Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes inflamed. If it is left untreated, it can burst and lead to infection and may be fatal.

The condition is most common among people ages 10 to 30. It is most often treated by removing the appendix.

Robert, 14 and the son of Steve Irwin, had his appendix removed this January.

“Kicking off the new year with emergency surgery,” Robert wrote on Instagram in his typical upbeat tone.

It had to have been a scare for the family, which lost dad Steve in 2006, but the good news is Robert is recovering well.

His sister Bindi posted a post-surgery photo of her and Robert playing Monopoly with her boyfriend, each of them wearing huge smiles.

“So proud of my amazing brother,” she wrote. “On New Year’s Day he got his appendix out with emergency surgery…. Now we’re home at Australia Zoo and he’s doing fantastic!”

A representative for the Australia Zoo confirmed that report. The representative added that Robert would still be participating in the Wildlife Warriors show at Australia Zoo as much as he could with his mother and sister.

Robert was only 3 years old when his father passed from a stingray injury, and he has honored him in part by working in conservation.

The family announced last year that they will begin working on projects with Animal Planet again.

Mom Terri was thrilled with the care Robert got at the hospital, and fans of the family’s work have expressed their support.

“Get well soon,” one fan wrote on Instagram. “Your positivity and smile always makes me try to be a good human being.”
