2 Weeks after Visiting Nail Salon, Woman in Hospital on Verge of Amputation

Share

The importance of self-care is a hot topic in today’s society. Many people, often mothers of young children, find it difficult to devote time to their own mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health.

Self-care practices differ depending on the individual. For some, it might be simply going on a walk, while for others it could be an intense workout at the gym.

The list goes on, and for Maria Luisa Gerardo, going to the nail salon was her form of self-care.

In fact, she told KNXV, “This is the only thing I ever liked doing to myself, my nails.” However, she has decided she never wants to return to the salon again.

Gerardo was a regular at TJ Nails in Phoenix. As a loyal customer for over 12 years, she even earned herself the nickname “Mama” at the salon.

Gerardo left her most recent manicure appointment, which would certainly be her last, with a small cut on her finger. But that finger swelled the next day and resulted in a trip to urgent care.

The antibiotics prescribed did not stop her finger from continuing to swell and worsen in appearance. And when she went back to TJ Nails, they made the serious infection seem minor.

Gerardo talked to the nail technician who downplayed the situation. Though he told her it was “nothing,” he gave her $100 for medicine.

But more medicine was not going to heal her finger. She ended up at Maricopa Integrated Health System and needed surgery on the infected finger.

Gerardo was on the verge of amputation, but narrowly avoided it, though there are no guarantees for the future. As she recovered in the hospital, she could not even stand to look at her finger because of its alarming appearance.

Her son, Victor Gerardo, posted an update on Facebook: “My mom is finally home, we’re waiting on a nurse to come give antibiotics for 6 weeks this isn’t even close to being over but she is at home thankfully. I as well as the family appreciate all the loving well wishes, it means alot.”
