Unwanted parenting advice coming directly from a person or from the vast number of parenting posts online is difficult to avoid. There are many topics regarding parenting that are simply a matter of opinion.
However, car seat safety is not a matter related to parenting style. The consequences of incorrect car seat usage and installation can be fatal.
The time and effort involved in parents learning about car seat safety can be extensive. Topics such as extended rear facing and the correct way to install a specific seat will usually take more than few minutes to discuss.
Kaitlyn Lawson, a mom and EMT, has an incredibly simple tip related to children in car seats.
She shared how adding a single piece of paper to a car seat could save your child’s life.
If you are a parent, imagining the following scene can be upsetting. In this hypothetical scene, parents are driving with young children not yet able to speak when they get into a car accident.
The parents have become unconscious. Suddenly, their children’s best advocates are not able to respond to even the simplest questions in a time of emergency.
Lawson shared, “It takes two minutes of your time to write out your child’s name, date of birth, emergency contacts, any medical conditions, any medicine your child is on, and even your child’s doctor, then stick it to the child’s car seat. This helps EMS a ton and can also help save your child’s life.”
This brilliant idea is one of the simplest parenting tips I’ve seen that could actually have a huge impact.

Rose City Area Fire Dept affirmed their belief in this advice by reposting Lawson’s original words and photo.
“Way too often do firefighters come upon a car wreck with child(ren) in the car who are too young to have any info and parents are unconscious,” the post stated.
If the idea of having your child’s personal information taped to their car seat is of concern to you depending on the visibility it would have to those looking in, another Twitter user, RicoAirPenguin, suggested putting the paper in an envelope addressed to “EMT / Firefighters.”
