Judy Garland Daughter Collapses Backstage After Concert, Rushed To Emergency Room
Judy Garland played an unforgettable role as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” Who could forget her singing “Over the Rainbow” at the beginning of the movie?
As the character Dorothy longed for a place free from the troubles of the Kansas farm, she sang, “And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.” While Garland was only playing a movie role in this instance, her life seemed to reflect the notion of longing for a faraway place beyond the rainbow.
Garland was undeniably a star and loved by many. Could there be a place offering a better life for her than the reality in which she was already living as a movie star?
Garland’s life was far from being picture-perfect. She struggled with drug addiction that unavoidably affected her family, including her daughter Lorna Luft.
Luft turned to drugs but was initially in denial that she was going down the same path of addiction as her mom. She was confronted with the similarity in her drug-use behavior and that of her mother’s.
According to Good Housekeeping, Luft responded to the confronter by saying, “No no no, she had a problem. I only do it at night.”
Despite the struggles of this mother and daughter with drugs, Garland and Luft both went on to become successful singers, actresses, and more.
Just as Garland’s personal life was more complex and challenging than her on-screen performances might have suggested, the same can be said for Luft. Luft, 65, was at a concert on March 9 in London.
It wasn’t until she was backstage that she collapsed. After being rushed to the hospital, Luft underwent many tests to determine the cause of her collapse.
A brain tumor is a possible diagnosis and perhaps not completely unexpected considering her husband, Colin Freeman, has made some concerning observations about Luft’s forgetfulness. She has forgotten a monologue and lyrics.
This collapse wasn’t Luft’s first health scare. She struggled with breast cancer for six years and is in remission.
Luft used to avoid songs containing the word “rainbow” as to differentiate herself from her mom’s famous “Over the Rainbow.” She told Good Housekeeping she learned she “had to stop running” from things associated with her mom.
Both Garland and Luft had notable onstage and onscreen presences, but also experienced serious struggles behind the scenes. We hope Luft recovers well from this most recent backstage collapse.
