Meal Company Pays Man's $1,635 Uber Bill for Choosing Not to Drive Home Drunk

Share

Kenny Bachman, 21, had a lot to explain when he came home one night. Ultimately, it’s a good thing he had the chance to explain himself at all considering the worst case scenario of how his night could have gone.

Bachman’s home is in New Jersey, but he traveled to the University of West Virginia to party with friends.

His excessive drinking one night led him to black out at a bar. Still, he made the right decision to call an Uber rather than get behind the wheel to go home.

His destination should not have been his home address in New Jersey but rather the address of the friend with whom he was staying near the school’s campus. After hours of being passed out in the Uber, Bachman woke up to the announcement that he was in New Jersey.

The 21-year-old would be facing a lot more than his mom after a night of partying. Bachman faced a $1,635.93 bill for his unintentional ride from West Virginia to New Jersey.

The 2011 Toyota Sienna was an UberXL, which made the ride even more expensive, but Bachman had specifically ordered it. He later challenged the charge with Uber believing that, even in his drunken state, he hadn’t entered his home address.

He commented to the Asbury Park Press, “What man in their right mind would think it’s a good idea to take someone as intoxicated as I am across state lines to New Jersey?” After disputing the charges, Bachman was deemed responsible for paying.

His parents were upset, but the founder of Eat Clean Bro, Jamie Giovinazzo, was struck by Bachman’s decision to not drink and drive that night, even if it meant an Uber charge over $1,600. The meal-delivery company relies on safe roads free of drunk drivers so Giovinazzo stepped up to pay Bachman’s Uber bill.

“I’m really glad he didn’t get behind the wheel. Even in that state of mind he still made the right choice,” Giovinazzo told the Asbury Park Press.

Before the company offered to pay the hefty bill, Bachman jokingly made a GoFundMe fundraiser to help him pay the bill. Shockingly, people actually began donating.

His decision to create a fundraising page on the site was met with harsh criticism that he should be solely responsible for his bill. Eat Clean Bro came up with the wonderful idea to donate any money raised, which is up to $730, to the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
