Woman Peels Off Old Wallpaper In Home, Finds Note From Previous Owner Underneath

Share

When buyers are interested in purchasing a house, they have certain requirements and preferences regarding the structure and layout. Does a particular house meet the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, for example, that the buyers would like?

The above question is rather simple to answer. It is much more difficult to determine whether or not a house feels like home.

Buyers often must be able to look past dislikes that are easily fixable, such as a wall paint color, if it means the house is otherwise a strong contender in the home search. Donna Hurry, a homeowner in Charlottetown, on Prince Edward Island in Canada, has been living in an older home.

Many buyers would not have considered purchasing a home like Hurry’s because of its age. Hurry saw the charm in the house, however.

She found that much of the charm of her home was hidden under the old wallpaper. It wasn’t that the surface itself was extraordinarily appealing, but she discovered something extraordinary that gave the home more character.

As Hurry peeled off the old wallpaper, she found a note from the previous owner scrawled on the wall underneath. It began with the sentence: “In this Last Testimonial, I, Cyril Beverley Armstrong, do hereby state that this household was well pleased with this sound lodging.”

Confirmation of “sound lodging” is always good in an old home! Of course, homeowners usually don’t find this confirmation underneath old wallpaper.

The note continued, “I, my father HB, mother EG, brothers Nigel and Michael, my sisters, Wendy, Daphne, and Heather also share in my opinions. I wish that this coming generation of family will also fully reach enjoyment here.”

“It does my heart good to see an old home have precedence over a new one. Yours, Home Sweet Home,” was the conclusion.

Hurry was able to get in touch with the author of the note, Cyril Armstrong. She invited him over to her home to show him her discovery.

Armstrong, 65, believed that he was 15 years old as he hung the wallpaper with his mom. When she left the room to make dinner, he seized his opportunity and wrote the note.

CBC News asked Hurry what her favorite part of the note was, which she does not intend on covering up. “Home Sweet Home, because you really feel at home here and you knew somebody that lived here before you felt the same way,” she answered with appreciation.
