Jenna Bush Gives Update on Grandfather George HW Bush's Condition
The world lost a remarkable and beloved former first lady when Barbara Bush passed away on April 17, 2018.
But George H.W. Bush lost his wife of 73 years, and there is nothing that could possibly replace the bond the two shared.
The longest-married couple in presidential history met at a Christmas dance when they were teenagers, and spent long hours talking into the night rather than waltzing.
In a letter penned to his “darling Bar” during his time as a Navy pilot in World War II, it is clear how deep his love was for his future wife.
“This may sound melodramatic, but if it does it is only my inadequacy to say what I mean. Bar, you have made my life full of everything I could ever dream of — my complete happiness should be a token of my love for you.”
One day after his wife’s funeral, the former president was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
Bush was taken into intensive care at Houston Methodist Hospital on April 23 after contracting an infection that spread to his blood and led to sepsis.
Sepsis can be life-threatening if not addressed quickly, and a source close to the former president revealed he was in critical condition upon arrival.
He also suffers from vascular parkinsonism, “a rare syndrome that mimics Parkinson’s disease,” and uses an electric wheelchair for mobility.
His blood pressure has since stabilized, and he has been responding to treatments.
His granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager, gave an update on the former president’s condition on the “Today” show.
“He’s sad, but he’s doing well,” she said. “Last time we talked to him he was eating barbeque.”
Although he is expected to make a full recovery and make the trip to the family’s compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, next month, it is clear that Bush might be suffering from a little more than an infection in his blood.
After all, he did just lose his wife of 73 years and is most likely missing her desperately. The heart is a fragile thing, especially when it is broken from the passing of a loved one.
