Mom Hears Terrifying Meow over Baby Monitor, Finds 6-Week-Old Turning Blue in Crib
Many new couples start their family by adopting a pet before deciding to have children. It’s a fun and engaging way to practice taking care of something that depends on you for their every need.
We grow attached to our pets, and I know many people who view their pets as their kids. They dote on them as if they were actually their own baby.
For one particular family interviewed by Oprah in the year 2000, their adoption of a little kitten named Midnight was an unexpected blessing. In the beginning, though, they had no idea how big of a blessing it would turn out to be.
Roy and Bernita Rogers had tried for multiple years to have a child. Bernita had suffered through three babies being born prematurely and tragically dying.
She describes this painful season in their lives as, “There’s a place that you don’t know will ever be filled, that love you have for a child. A child you can nurture and hold. And you reach a point that you know it’s going to be a whole in your heart that nothing quite fills.”
During that time, a black kitten wandered into their backyard. The Rogers family decided to adopt the cat, and named him Midnight.
Within that year, Bernita got pregnant for the fourth time, and gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Stacey.
She said, “I do believe that Stacey’s birth was a miracle. I don’t know if I can put into words how long we waited and how special that made her. That she was the one waiting for us, just waiting all those years.”
As Stacey grew, the Rogers were very protective of their baby girl. At six weeks, the baby came down with a cold, but their pediatrician told her not to worry, and that it was just a bug going around.
Later that afternoon, Bernita put Stacey down for a nap with the baby monitor right by the bassinet.
Midnight had developed a behavior of watching over Stacey, and stayed by the infant’s side when Bernita went downstairs to visit with her parents.
Bernita reported that a few minutes later Midnight bolted down the stairs and jumped into her lap, apparently trying to get her attention about something. Because Midnight was a naturally affectionate cat with high energy, Bernita brushed him off.
Midnight then ran back up the stairs and started yowling and screaming into the baby monitor. Bernita was so alarmed by the sounds that she ran upstairs to check on the baby.
Stacey was turning blue and struggling to breathe. They rushed her to the hospital where they were, thankfully, able to save her life, although she had gone into full respiratory failure.
Bernita said after the incident, “This cat actually saved this baby’s life, for us. And I feel like there’s no way we could repay him.”
At the time the video was made, Stacey was a healthy 12-year-old, and described a strong friendship with the cat Midnight who saved her life. What a blessing it is to have a household pet to grow and love on throughout her young life.
