Woman Gets Call about 5 Frozen Puppies. Knows They Are Christmas Miracles

Share

Tessa Lee was about to leave work for the holiday weekend when she received a call. The person on the phone reported that a group of puppies was abandoned in the freezing-cold weather.

Lee runs animal intake for the Whitecourt Homeless Animal Rescue Foundation (WHARF) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

She hurried to the reported location but feared she might have been too late.

“We didn’t know if they would pull through,” Lee later said. She saw the bodies of some of the puppies that had already succumbed to the cold.

When she got back, Lee realized she had her work cut out for her.

The puppies were so malnourished they could hardly stand, and had reverted back to bottle feeding.

Out of the five puppies she rescued, four of them made a quick turnaround. It was the fifth, Ruby, that had Lee worried.

Ruby didn’t have the strength to lift any part of her body when Lee rescued her. It was questionable whether or not she’d recover at all.

When Christmas morning came, Lee saw something that immediately made her pull out her phone to record.

Ruby was up and walking — hobbling to Lee so she could be fed.

“It’s a Christmas miracle,” Lee said to CBC News. “She wants to live, and that’s a big thing.”

The video gained some attention online, and Lee hopes it will help this family of dogs find a forever home.

Ruby’s movement might be a bit sloppy at the moment, but she’s made a massive improvement from when Lee originally found her.

Sadly, finding abandoned animals around Christmas isn’t something new for Lee. She says that Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for WHARF.

“It seems like every Christmas Eve, there’s an emergency,” Lee said. “My family’s already prepared to have an emergency animal at Christmas dinner with us.”

Fortunately, this story has a happy ending for Ruby and her siblings. The puppies will stay with Lee until they’re healthy enough to find a forever home.
