Family Scraping Wallet for Grocery Change, Cashier Knows They Can't Afford the Total
We all fall short sometimes, and sometimes that may be in the money we owe while shopping or eating out. It’s mortifying to find yourself scrambling to find the amount you need.
Perhaps you’ve been on the other end of this situation, watching someone else struggle to find a few quarters at the bottom of a purse or desperately checking their pockets.
There are numerous stories of strangers helping people who end up short on a bill.
Occasionally, it’s the waiter covering the meal or a shopper paying for someone else’s groceries. At a Hy-Vee grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa, it was someone else this time.
A Facebook post by Charis Hope Hansen explained what took place the day she was standing in a checkout line.
The family in front of her was “scraping pennies (literally) and only had less than $3 on their EBT card.”
Placing their change on the conveyor, it rolled off and became stuck under the counter. Connor, the cashier, knew the family couldn’t afford the total, but he still tried retrieving most of the coins.
“As he was counting it all out he knew they didn’t have enough — he got his own wallet out and put $2 in so they could get the few items they had got,” Hansen wrote. “When he did it, he did it like it was no big deal.”
Connor’s benevolent act has already touched a lot of people, as shown by the 4.6 thousand likes on Facebook. Hansen wanted everyone to know just how impressed she was with his generosity.
“This young man went above and beyond for this customer and I would love to see this man be recognized for an outstanding employee,” she said.
“What an act of selflessness and kindness to help someone less fortunate.”
Customers who have once come in contact with Connor had nothing but nice things to say about his service.
“He checked my son and I out last night, what a kind gentleman,” someone wrote.
“He has checked me out a few times,” another person mentioned. “Great manners and awesome customer service!”
“I had the honor of having Conor check us out the last time I was at Hy’Vee and he was very kind and had great customer service,” another said. “I hope he receives some recognition for paying it forward.”
