Celebrity Chef Says Her Secret to Perfect Grilled Cheese Is Nutmeg & Dijon Mustard

Share

Ah, the grilled cheese. It’s a staple in many young children’s diets.

It’s my second favorite food, only behind mac and cheese. Even though I recognize that my food preferences reflect that of a 4-year-old, grilled cheese does have the ability to be “gussied up.”

But in order to allow the grilled cheese to mature, you have to be open to… interesting ideas: ideas that push the norms of buttered Wonder bread and Kraft cheese slices.

You can get creative with your cheese choice to get started. Using cheeses like Muenster, Havarti, or Goat Cheese can transform the beloved sandwich.

Another way to spice things up is to add things like ham, bacon or avocado. I’ve even seen someone make a blueberry cream cheese grilled cheese as a dessert option.

And in lieu of butter, some people use mayonnaise to get the golden crisp on the outside.

Celebrity chef Justine Schofield has shared her favorite version of the classic toasted sandwich we all know and love.

It’s actually called a Croque Monsieur, which is a french sandwich featuring ham, white sauce, and cheese. She called it the “king of all toasted sandwiches.”

Her secret ingredients? Nutmeg and Dijon mustard.

She told Daily Mail, “They pair beautifully with nutty cheeses.” And I have to admit, her recipe is mouth-watering.

After making a basic roux, she adds milk, gruyere, mustard and nutmeg to a basic roux to make a gooey, cheesy Béchamel sauce. That sauce then gets poured over toasted sourdough with slice of ham on top.

Once the sandwich is assembled, it gets toasted in a pan with butter until golden and crispy!

While I grew up with a basic butter and Kraft grilled cheese, there are obviously multiple ways to make this iconic sandwich. How do you like to make your grilled cheese?
