Couple Stages Hospital Wedding So Ailing 100-Year-Old Granny Could Be There
An engaged couple couldn’t bear the thought of their 100-year-old Granny missing their wedding day, so when they learned that she had been admitted to the hospital, they threw an unofficial ceremony in her hospital room six months early.
Sky Howard and Clay Cameron first met on New Year’s Eve in 2015. Howard told “Good Morning America” that her fiance’s family has welcomed her from the very beginning — including Charlotte Broussard, affectionately known as “Granny.”
“Granny is a firecracker,” Howard said. “She’s got a lot of spunk. She’s always had a really fun, sharp personality.”
When Howard and Cameron got engaged they knew they wanted their wedding date to hold a special meaning so they planned to get married on Dec. 31, 2019.
As the date got closer they continued to excitedly share their plans with their families, but when Granny’s health took a turn for the worse the young couple knew they needed to come up with a way to make sure she could still be a part of the big day.
“She’s the matriarch of that family,” Howard said. “Her health declined pretty rapidly and she was put in hospice. That worried us. We didn’t want her to miss that moment.”
The bride-to-be told Today that Broussard had stopped eating, drinking and talking so they knew they needed to pull something together quickly.
Even though they wanted to keep their original New Year’s Eve wedding date, they organized an intimate unofficial ceremony in Granny’s hospital room.
“We kept it small and intimate. We didn’t want to bombard Granny with a bunch of people,” Howard said. “I sent a message to Amy (Taylor, the photographer), who is a good friend, and said, ‘This is last minute. We’re thinking tomorrow. Can you be there?'”
On May 29, 2019, Howard put on her wedding dress and Cameron dressed up in a suit and cowboy hat and they gathered with just a few people for the sweet, heartwarming ceremony.
Taylor, the owner of A Taylored Image, was there to capture the moments in a series of truly unforgettable pictures.
“Everyone in the room was warm and happy. I was privileged to be there,” Taylor told “Good Morning America.”
Granny’s smile shows just how much the gesture meant to her.
Since the photos were posted on Facebook, they have understandably gone viral, touching the hearts of those who see them.
Thankfully Granny’s health has improved and she has been transferred to an assisted living home.
“We never in a million years imagined this would get so much attention,” Howard told Today. “We just thought we were doing right by Grandma.”
