Elementary Gathers in Hall To Sing 'Eye of the Storm' After Praying Before Imminent Hurricane

Share

As millions of people are evacuating and preparing for Hurricane Florence, one elementary school is teaching its students that there’s hope, even in the “eye of the storm.”

The National Hurricane Center is predicting that Hurricane Florence will hit the coastlines of North Carolina and South Carolina later this week.

If Florence hits the coast as a Category 4 storm, as it was designated as of Wednesday morning, it will only be the third storm to do so in recorded history according to The Atlantic.

“There’s never been a storm like Florence. It was located farther north in the Atlantic than any other storm to ever hit the Carolinas, so what we’re forecasting is unprecedented. Also, most storms coming into the Carolinas tend to move northward, and this storm looks like it’s going to stall over the region and potentially bring tremendous, life-threatening flooding,” said Marshall Moss, vice president of forecasting and graphics operations for AccuWeather.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall overnight Thursday into Friday morning, according to WFTX. In addition to flooding, damaging winds are expected to affect the surrounding areas following the initial impact, making it impossible to foresee just how much damage will occur.

As residents of these areas either evacuate or hunker down in preparation for the storm, it is hard for them to escape the grips of anxiety and worry.

Wayne Christian School, an elementary school in Goldsboro, North Carolina, is using this opportunity to teach its students about the overwhelming peace that can be found in Christ in the midst of such scary, tumultuous situations.

A video posted to Facebook on Tuesday shared that the students took a moment of their day to pray for everyone who is being affected by the coming storm.

Can we all learn something from these children?

After the students spent a few moments in prayer, something truly special happened.

The hallway full of children began singing a worship song that describes God’s calming love: Ryan Stevenson’s “Eye of the Storm.”

The students can be heard singing, “In the eye of the storm, You remain in control, and in the middle of the war, You guard my soul, You alone are the anchor, when my sails are torn, Your love surrounds me, in the eye of the storm.”

This is such a sweet reminder that in the middle of such anxiety and fear, God hasn’t left us and His constant, unchanging love for us can serve as an anchor in an ever-changing world. It’s a comforting truth.

Wayne Christian School has decided to teach its students that fundamental truth in a tangible way.

Our prayers go out to those who are being affected by Hurricane Florence. We hope that they are reminded of the powerful truths that were sung by these precious elementary school children.
