Officer Delivers Groceries to Elderly Woman in Need After Welfare Check

Share

Something as simple as taking the time to notice and care for others can make a huge impact on the community.

Recently a Benicia, California, police officer went above and beyond for an elderly woman that he met while on the job, and over a thousand people from the community praised him for his kind acts.

On Oct. 29, 2018, Officer Alvarez responded to a call about an elderly woman. Her out-of-town family called the police after they were unable to get a hold of her.

When he pulled up to her house, he discovered that she was fine and ensured that she was able to talk to her family.

She is confined to a wheelchair and is dependent on Meals on Wheels to bring her food a couple times a week.

Just a week later, the caring officer returned to the woman’s home to make sure she was still doing okay.

He asked her if she needed anything and she, in fact, admitted that she needed a few more food items.

Then Officer Alvarez went above and beyond his call of duty and went to the nearest grocery store to purchase some staples, with his own money.

“Milk, eggs, oatmeal, cereal, Ritz crackers, cream of chicken soups, and a few other items,” are some of the items Officer Alvarez told KTVU that he purchased that day.

When he returned, hands full of grocery bags, she was overwhelmed with gratefulness.

He said that she was “extremely thankful and surprised that I was willing to help her.”

The Benicia Police Department shared a picture of Officer Alvarez with the groceries he purchased for the woman.

“We owe a lot to this community, and we are proud of our officers who will always do the extra step to help anyone in need,” the department wrote.
