Paul McCartney Leaves James Corden in Tears Explaining Meaning of Lyrics to 'Let It Be'

James Corden just finished a week-long trip where he shot special episodes of CBS’ “The Late, Late Show” from London. And of course, he ended in style.

During the show’s iconic “Carpool Karaoke” segment, Corden was joined by a special guest: Paul McCartney.

The 76-year-old music icon joined Corden on a drive through Liverpool where they visited sites from McCartney’s childhood and early musical career.

As the pair conveniently turns onto Penny Lane, they began singing the well-known Beatles song by the same name. McCartney began pointing out buildings and street corners that were featured in the song, and they stopped in a local barbershop. He even signed the Penny Lane wall!

On their way to McCartney’s childhood home, Corden began talking about how timeless McCartney’s music has been from generation to generation.

“Your music is so full of positivity and joy and a message of love and togetherness. I feel like it’s more relevant now today than maybe it’s ever been,” Corden remarked. McCartney agreed and admitted that the Beatles never thought their music would last more than 10 years.

The music legend then went on to share a dream he had in the ’60s. His late mother came to him in the dream and told him, “It’s going to be okay. Just let it be.” Her encouraging message not only lifted a great weight of pressure off of young McCartney, but also inspired the song “Let It Be.”

What McCartney didn’t know was that Corden also had a personal connection to that particular song. As the song played in the car, tears began welling up in Corden’s eyes.

McCartney responded to his unexpected emotional moment by saying, “I’ll tell you that’s the power of music. It’s weird, isn’t it? How that can do that to you?”

Corden then told McCartney that when he was a young boy, his father and grandfather, who was also a musician, sat him down to listen to “Let It Be” by the Beatles. They told him that it would be “the best song you’ve ever heard.”

“If my grandad was here right now, he’d get an absolute kick out of this,” Corden said proudly. “He is,” McCartney quickly responded as more tears fell from Corden’s eyes.

They then visited McCartney’s childhood home where he showed Corden where he and John Lennon worked out some of the band’s earliest songs. He even showed off the house’s “Acoustic Chamber,” otherwise known as the bathroom.

The pair ended their day at a pub where McCartney and the rest of the Beatles first started performing. Corden got behind the bar and began serving drinks as a bartender.

He then encourages one of the patrons to put something on the jukebox which prompted a curtain to be raised, revealing McCartney and a full band. Those in the bar were absolutely shocked and were able to enjoy a small, intimate concert by the music legend. McCartney even asked Corden to join him in singing “Hey Jude.”

There’s no doubt that McCartney’s music has impacted millions of people all over the world. His day spent with Corden only proves that even further.
