Why Guy Fieri Keeps His Reviews Positive on Food Network's 'Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives'

In today’s society, it’s hard to find positive stories. It seems like if something is said, whether in the media or on social media, it’s rarely encouraging or hopeful.

But even though it seems like we’re being drowned in negativity, there are always small lights of positivity that shine through.

Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” is one of those small lights. Guy Fieri, the famous host of the long-running show, shows off locally owned hole-in-the-wall restaurants week after week.

In the 26 seasons that the show has been on air, Fieri has never talked negatively about a featured establishment, even if it’s not his personal favorite, and it’s obviously been a good strategy for the five-time Emmy nominated show.

He shared on a recent podcast called “The Moment” that not every single dish he tries is the best thing he’s ever eaten, despite the dramatic reactions he gives on the show.

“Why highlight the negative? Never call me a food critic. That’s the farthest thing that I am,” Fieri said. “I’m bringing the greatest hits! It wasn’t Casey Kasem’s worst music countdown. People listened for the top 40.”

Fieri told Brian Koppelman, the host of the podcast, that the restaurant owners will often ask about his honest opinions once the cameras turn off.

While every dish may not be an instant hit in his opinion, he does think each one is “good.”

He elaborated, “We’ll go to commercial, and they’ll go, ‘Well, did you like that?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah it was good.’ And they’ll go, ‘Well you didn’t go, like, ‘This is off the hook.” And I’m like, ‘Well, it was good.’ And I’m like, ‘Don’t be offended, I don’t like every single song that’s on the Rolling Stones album.'”

Fieri also said that he loves giving advice to chefs who ask for it.

He has helped multiple chefs make small improvements to their recipes before traveling to the next destination.

“As chefs, we all try and support each other and we all try to help each other grow,” he said.

Guy Fieri obviously understands the power behind encouraging words and actions and is using his platform to spread some of it around.
