Heartwarming: Woman Breaks Down Crying When She Hears Voice of Late-Mother Inside Bear
For the past two years, Bernadette Weekes had put her heart and soul into the care and wellbeing of her aging mother, Margaret Weekes.
Bernadette, 55, was her mother’s main caretaker, all the way up until the end.
Bernadette was still raw with emotion after her mother’s death earlier this year. Finding a new normal, a daily routine that didn’t center around her mother’s health, was likely not an easy transition.
When Margaret passed, her daughter Bernadette was there. Margaret was the proud matriarch of her family with 11 children, 17 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
One of those grandchildren, Patrick Harris, decided to find a way to help ease Bernadette’s pain.
Harris wasn’t quite sure if the timing was right to give such an intimate present to his mother, but he decided to go through with it.
Harris remembered that his grandmother always told people how she loved them. “I love you,” was a common phrase for Margaret, even to people she scarcely knew.
The memory prompted Harris to seek out a recording of his grandmother saying her favorite phrase. He brought the recording to his local Build-a-Bear store and gently placed a recording device inside a stuffed teddy bear.
He stitched the stuffed bear up and gave her a name — Mother Love. Then, he brought the bear home to his grieving mother.
When Bernadette opened the box, she delighted at the teddy waiting inside. Harris prompted his mother to press on the bear’s paw, and she obliged.
When Bernadette heard that sweet, familiar phrase that belonged to her late mother, she wept.
Her face filled with shock and tears. As she lamented and celebrated her mother’s life, a piece of her mother was preserved inside a soft teddy.
Harris said his mother never suspected he’d show up with such a heartfelt gift out of the blue.
“She had no idea,” Harris said. “When I gave it to her she immediately started breaking down.”
“I knew she would be surprised and love it,” he said. “I was nervous it might have been too much for her to handle, but she loved it.”
Harris was moved to see how much his mother appreciated the thoughtful gift. Of all the aspects of a person to miss, hearing their voice is certainly one of them.
“Mom said it’s one of the greatest gifts she’ll ever get and she feels like she has been given her mom back,” Harris said.
