Meaning Behind Gaines' Names Revealed & Predictions for Baby No. 5's

Share

Fans were thrilled when the famed Chip and Joanna Gaines revealed the gender of their fifth child on March 7. After months of anticipation, the Magnolia dynasty couple proudly announced they were expecting a boy.

Naming a baby is both really fun and slightly stressful, as Chip mentioned on Twitter when he said the only boy name he could think of at the moment was “Dragon.”

The father did say, however, that he and Jo are searching for the perfect “D” name for their baby, to complement the names of older brothers Drake and Duke.

Chip and Joanna have created a pattern in naming their four kids. The boys have strong, masculine “D” names, and their two daughters have softer, delicate feminine names — Ella Rose and Emmie Kay.

Names hold a lot of weight in the Gaines family, including Chip and Joanna’s names.

Fans can expect the name of baby number five will be chosen with great care and will have a significant meaning, much like the rest of the family.

Chip Gaines, born in 1974, does not go by a nickname or abbreviated first name. His legal name, as many fans were surprised to learn, is Chip Gaines.

According to Country Living, Chip’s name eludes to the German name “Chipper,” which means “free man.” For an entrepreneur of Chip’s magnitude, we can be pretty certain he prefers to be his own boss.

Joanna Gaines, born Joanna Lee Stevens, was born in 1978. Her first name means “God is gracious,” a perfect fit for a woman who boldly professes that her faith always comes first.

Drake Gaines, 12, carries a first name that pays tribute to the historic Drake Hotel where Chip and Joanna honeymooned. The name also gives a nod to Sir Francis Drake, synonymous with strength and confidence.

Ella Rose Gaines, 11, is a picture of light and sweetness, just like her name infers. Ella comes from Eleanor and Ellen, which both mean light, and Rose is appropriate for the little girl who is learning a love for gardening like her mother.

Duke Gaines, 9, seems to have a real spirit of adventure, á la famous Western star John Wayne, who also went by “Duke.” Youngest daughter Emmie Kay, 7, embodies a small-but-mighty personality, perfect for her name meaning “eager” and “hardworking,” and middle name “fiery.”
