Neglected Dog Trapped Inside Severely Matted Fur Makes Incredible Transformation After Rescue

Share

When Lancaster Animal Shelter staff first laid eyes on a neglected shih tzu named Magnolia, it was obvious she had suffered for many years in whatever home she had come from.

Magnolia could not see through the mangled thatch of hair covering her entire face.

She probably was not able to see the person who dropped her at the shelter, but the decision to get the dog some help was one of the kindest acts a human had performed for Magnolia in years.

The senior shih tzu’s fur was so matted and covered in filth that it was a wonder the dog could even breathe. This dog needed medical care and a loving home immediately.

The Lancaster Animal Shelter contacted the Lancaster SPCA, needing help with the pup’s medical bills and finding a top-notch foster home.

As the freshly shaved hair fell from Magnolia’s face, she took in her new environment and the start of her brand-new life.

Staff members were disappointed to learn that Magnolia was around 9 or 10 years old — meaning she likely suffered neglect at the hands of her previous owner for around a decade.

While waiting for just the right adoptive family, Magnolia moved in with LSPCA President Diana Knight, her new foster mom.

Knight told The Dodo that the majority of Magnolia’s pain seemed to be her emotional wounds. But as the dog’s personality began to emerge, Knight found the dog to be sweet and loving.

“She is a complete joy,” Knight told The Dodo. “After living what we believe to be 9 to 10 years in filth and in a neglected place, she is enjoying car rides, toys, walks and is being spoiled by all who visit her. She is one of the worst we have taken in.”

After living in loneliness for so many years, Magnolia was eager to soak up all the love she was offered.

“She is a typical shih tzu,” Knight said. “She just wants to be with her person and get love.”

As of May 28, Magnolia had received a thorough veterinarian’s exam and was needing an adoptive home. “She is very sweet, affectionate, loves people, kids and dogs,” The Lancaster SPCA wrote on Facebook.

Thankfully, the worst is over for this pup, and she will be able to live out her senior doggy years under the care of humans who love her.
